Graduate Women-NSW Inc. awards scholarships and prizes annually. They are administered by Trustees of GW-NSW Inc Education Trust.

Please note: the value of scholarships may vary from year to year at the discretion of the Trustees. Branches award prizes at their own discretion.

JAMIESON AWARD – Women completing their first degree

CLOSED FOR 2024

GW-NSW offers this award to outstanding women students who completed the final year of their first degree (in 2023) and are proceeding to approved further study.

Value: $2000

Eligibility:

  • High achieving women students who completed the final year of their first undergraduate degree in 2023 at any university listed on the Australian Universities’ list with campuses in NSW or ACT
  • Students enrolled in double degrees may only apply when the final year of the degree was completed in 2023
  • Preference is given to applicants who’ve made a significant contribution to their community
  • Must be an Australian citizen or permanent resident of Australia.

CENTRAL WEST – DR BARBARA WRIGHT POSTGRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP 

The Dr Barbara Wright Postgraduate Scholarship is offered by the Central West Branch in ALTERNATE YEARS. This scholarship is available to women living in the Central West of NSW who are undertaking a postgraduate degree/research. Please check the Guidelines and application form below.

CENTRAL WEST – HSC SCHOLARSHIP FOR STUDENTS IN THE COWRA-CANOWINDRA AREA

The annual Cowra-Canowindra HSC Scholarship ($2,000) is awarded to two female students who live, and attend school, in the Cowra-Canowindra area. This scholarship aims to assist a highly-motivated female student from this region who has been accepted for university.
CLOSED FOR 2024 – will reopen for 2025 later this year.

GW-NSW EDUCATION TRUST AWARD – 3rd year women students

The GW NSW Education Trust Awards support women students in their third year of full time study, of their first degree, with good academic results in the course so far. The GW-NSW Education Trust Awards have been made possible by the generous donations and bequests of GW-NSW Members.

Value:  Up to $2000

Eligibility:

  • Female
  • Must be in the third year of a full-time course (having completed two years) for any degree, at any university listed on the Australian Universities’ list with campuses in NSW or ACT, (possibly planning to proceed to honours) and with a good academic record in the course so far (minimum Credit average)
  • Must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency in Australia.

JOAN RITCHIE AWARD – 2nd year women students

This annual award is for a mature age student in her second year of full-time study of her first degree, having completed the first full year of study at a satisfactory academic level, and who is experiencing personal disadvantage (and can provide evidence). The award is provided from a bequest by the late Ms Joan Ritchie.

OPEN FOR 2024

Value:  $1500

Eligibility:

  • Female
  • Must be 25 years or over at the time of applying
  • Must have completed 1st year, with a satisfactory academic record, and be in the second year of a full-time course of her first degree at any university listed on the Australian Universities’ list with campuses in NSW or ACT
  • Experiencing personal disadvantage:
    This may include-
    Financial difficulty or low income
    English as a second language
    Migrant or refugee status
    Disability or medical condition
    Family/caring responsibilities
    Geographical isolation/significant distance from campus
    Career/ Study disruption
  • Must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency in Australia.

CITY BRANCH TAFE TO UNIVERSITY AWARD 

City Branch of Graduate Women NSW has had a long association with TAFE NSW supporting women and girls in their advancement through the pursuit of education. City Branch recognises the special role that TAFE NSW plays in preparing students for university through its Tertiary Pathways Certificate (TPC) by providing a tertiary entrance score and access to university without the HSC.  As part of its ongoing support, City Branch offers an award to outstanding women who have successfully completed their TPC to a high standard and have successfully completed their first semester at university in 2023. 

Eligibility

Students must have:

  • completed the Tertiary Preparation Certificate (TAFE) to a high standard.
  • overcome personal hardship or disadvantage in completing their study.
  • successfully completed the first semester of University study.

Value: 

The amount of the award varies from year to year and in 2023, we will be offering an award of $800 to one student from each of the six TAFE NSW regions.

JOAN BIELSKI SCHOLARSHIP – 1st year mature age women students commencing their first degree

OPEN FOR 2024

The GW-NSW Education Trust invites applications for this scholarship every three years from woman aged 35 years and over at the time of application, who have been accepted into the first year of their first university degree at any university listed on the Australian Universities’ List in NSW or the ACT and can demonstrate hardship. Candidates must be Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Long time GW-NSW member, Joan Bielski AO, was a leading Australian feminist who left school at fourteen and only after service in the WAAF was she able to attend university as a returned service woman. Her wish was to enable other women who could not attend university after school, to receive this ‘second chance’ to attend university and she left a generous bequest to achieve this. Donations from her family and friends and members of GW-NSW completed the funding.

Value: $6,000 twice per annum for up to three years subject to satisfactory academic achievement – Credit Average.

Eligibility:

  • A woman aged 35 years or over at the time of applying
  • Undergraduate student in her first year of full time study at a university listed on the Australian Universities’ list with campuses in NSW or ACT
  • Has experienced hardship
  • Must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency in Australia.

THE TEMPE MANN TRAVELLING SCHOLARSHIP – Research masters or research doctoral degree women students 

OPEN FOR 2024

GW-NSW invites applications from women enrolled as research masters or research doctoral degree second or third year student at The University of Sydney, or those who have a first degree or masters from the University of Sydney, and are enrolled for a research doctorate at another university (listed on the Australian Universities’ list) with campuses in NSW or ACT. The Tempe Mann Travelling Scholarship is awarded to a woman undertaking a short period of advanced research or course work in any field, at an interstate or overseas university or equivalent organisation.

**PLEASE NOTE: Preference has previously been given to candidates planning to travel to an overseas institution, but due to COVID travel restrictions, anyone wishing to travel within Australia where she can undertake research that will enhance the quality of her thesis, is also encouraged to apply.

Value: up to $8,000. Applicants must justify each item of the amount requested in a detailed budget. The funds requested can be used only for the items identified in the budget and related to the proposed study program.

Tenure: The scholarship will be taken up in 2024-25 for a period to be agreed by the Trustees.

Eligibility:

  • Be enrolled as a research masters or research doctoral degree student at The University of Sydney, or have a first degree or masters from the University of Sydney and be enrolled for a doctorate at another university listed on the Australian Universities’ list with campuses in NSW or ACT
  • Have proof of acceptance by the university (or equivalent organisation) at which she proposes to conduct the research (not where you are currently enrolled)
  • Must be an Australian citizen or have permanent residency in Australia
  • Establish the necessity for overseas/interstate study/research
  • Short listed candidates will be required to attend an interview.

Conditions:

  • A written or verbal report must be presented at the conclusion of the study period.
  • Acknowledgement of the Tempe Mann Travelling Scholarship will be made in any related publications.
  • Completed online application form should be submitted to GW-NSW Inc by midnight of the closing date. No applications will be considered after this date.
