Central West Branch

The GW-NSW Central West branch is centred in the Cowra-Canowindra district.
Fundraising • Community Service • Scholarships

Purpose

Our purpose is to reward and support rural women in their advancement of education by fund raising activities that promote friendship and interest for ourselves and the community.

Central West Branch Meetings

The Central West Branch of GW-NSW is actively engaged in the community hosting two Luncheons and two Dinners each year. The four functions are attended by Branch and community members invited from a comprehensive mailing list who benefit from the experience and wisdom of an invited speaker with the purpose of raising funds for the Branch. An AGM is held each year and those elected are invited to committee meetings at either a Cowra or Canowindra member’s home.

Awards

The Central West Branch of GW-NSW awards two Scholarships to Rural Women

Cowra – Canowindra HSC Scholarship
The aim of this annual scholarship is to assist a highly-motivated female student who lives and attends school in the Cowra – Canowindra area and has been accepted for university. Highly commended awards may also be given at the discretion of the HSC Scholarship Committee.

The Cowra – Canowindra HSC Scholarship, is financed entirely from funds raised from our Central West group functions, newsletters and donations.

Please visit the Scholarships Summary page for more detail and closing date.

The Dr Barbara Wright Post-Graduate Scholarship
The generous Dr Barbara Wright Post-Graduate Scholarship is awarded to a woman from Central West NSW seeking to continue her post-graduate education.

Dr Barbara Wright
Dr Barbara Wright

Since its inception in 2001 this scholarship has been awarded every two years when funds permit. It was renamed in 2007 to honour one of our members, Dr Barbara Wright.

Dr Wright was a past president and committee member of the Branch for over 30 years. Barbara, whose eulogy was printed in the NSW and Australian (then) AFUW Newsletters in 2007, was a driving force in the establishment of this scholarship. She was a highly respected GP, who was committed to the local community and as a tribute following her death, GW-NSW Central West launched an appeal for funds to ensure the scholarship’s continuance. The generosity of the rural community and of Barbara’s many friends from far and wide has meant that a substantial sum has now been placed in the Graduate Women Education Trust.

Donations to the Dr Barbara Wright Post-Graduate Scholarship Fund are still welcome and are tax-deductible.
