Applications are invited for the third offering of the Joan Bielski Scholarship. This scholarship is available every three years from woman aged over 35 at the time of application, who have been accepted to university (first year) in NSW or the ACT and can demonstrate hardship. Candidates must be Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Long time GW-NSW member, Joan Bielski AO, was a leading Australian feminist and educator who left school at fourteen and only after service in the WAAF was able to attend university as a returned service woman. Her wish was to enable other women who could not attend university after school, to receive this ‘second chance’ to attend university. Joan left a generous bequest, which was added to by  donations from her family and friends and members of GW-NSW completed the funding.

Scholarship Value: $5,000 twice per annum for up to three years subject to satisfactory academic achievement.


  • A woman aged 35 years or over at the time of applying
  • Undergraduate student in her first year of full time study at a university in NSW or ACT
  • Has experienced hardship
  • Australian citizens or permanent residents.
