After appointing Britain’s newest Prime Minister, Liz Truss only a few days ago, her royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II has died at the age of 96.
Queen Elizabeth was a role model for service and loyalty, and an early and rare female world leader in a time dominated by men.
The ‘wattle painting’ featured here is of the newly crowned Queen Elizabeth II and was completed by Australian artist Sir William Dargie in 1954. The Queen’s 1954 tour was the first time a reigning monarch had set foot on Australian soil. Nearly 75 per cent of the country’s then nine million people caught a glimpse of the new young queen. The wattle painting is considered one of the most recognisable 20th century Australian portraits.
